What are Smoker Lines?

Smoker lines are a type of dynamic wrinkles that appear around the lips. They are small, vertical lines that form at the top of the upper lip, moving towards the nose. With age, continued sun exposure, and overuse of the muscles around the mouth turns them static.

What Caused Smoker Lines?

As with other facial wrinkles, smoker lines appear with repeated use of the muscles around the mouth when smoking a cigarette. They are more prevalent among smokers as cigarettes tend to accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin, which are integral for our skin’s elasticity and structure.

Even though the name suggests as such, you don’t have to be a smoker to have smoker lines. They are also called lip lines and barcode lines due to their resemblance to the lines of a barcode. On some occasions, smoker lines are also called lipstick lines as lipstick often bleeds into these crevices.

Smoker Lines Treatment with Dermal Fillers

High-grade dermal fillers and nano-fat transfers have become a go-to for various non-surgical facial aesthetic treatments. regenerer® specializes in both treatments. Our licenses nurse practitioners administer synthetic fillers containing cross-linked hyaluronic acid that is obtained from non-animal sources.

The fillers are injected underneath the wrinkles, immediately adding volume under the smoker lines. This makes them appear smoother and plumper. Furthermore, the hyaluronic acid stimulates collagen production and our skin’s natural healing process.

Nano-fat transfers are performed similarly to dermal fillers. Instead of synthetic compounds, stem cells are obtained from adipose tissue (fat tissues) in a centrifuge. The cells are then emulsified into an injectable formula, which is then administered through small needles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect during the procedure?

Highly trained and licensed nurses carry out the treatment by following industry best practices and meticulous accuracy. Before administering the injections, the nurse will clean and apply a topical anesthetic to numb the treatment area to reduce your discomfort.

How soon can I see the results?

Non-surgical smoker line treatments produce immediate results you will be able to see during the procedure. As the nurse administers the injections, you will be able to see the difference in the mirror they hand to you. The results will continue to improve over the following weeks.

How long do the results last?

The longevity of the results depends on various factors, including the patient’s health, how their body reacts to the treatment, and environmental factors such as sun exposure. Typically, results with dermal fillers can last up to 9 months.

Will I be in pain?

regenerer® prioritizes your health and comfort throughout the procedure. Our non-invasive treatments are meant to prevent the pain and discomfort that area associated with surgical intervention. However, a slight pinch and burning sensation are common during the procedure, which is minimized with a topical anesthetic.

If you experience increased anxiety or have a low-pain tolerance, regenerer® offers a pain management solution called Pro-Nox™. It is a pneumatically-delivered sedation system that relieves pain and anxiety without making you unconscious.

How long is the downtime?

regenerer® performs non-invasive procedures that ensure little to no downtime. Once the procedure is complete, you can return to your daily activities with some aftercare instructions to be mindful of:

  • Refraining from rubbing, touching, or massaging the area for at least the first six hours after the procedure.
  • Avoid sun exposure right after the procedure.
  • Don’t expose the treatment area to extreme heat (tanning beds, etc) or cold for at least 2 weeks after the procedure.
  • Keep the treatment area makeup-free for the first 12 hours.
  • Avoid smoking, consuming alcohol, and strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours.

*If you’re getting the procedure to prepare for an event like your wedding, plan it 4 to 6 weeks before. This is to ensure there is no residual swelling, redness, or bruising and to allow the fillers to settle properly.

Am I a candidate?

If you don’t have a serious skin or other physical condition, you might be eligible for a smoker lines treatment. Consult your physician first if you’re taking any medication or undergoing treatment for another ailment or condition.

*Please schedule your consultation with Dr. Khalique today to discuss your concerns and determine whether this technique is suitable for you or not.

Are there any side effects to be concerned about?

Non-surgical aesthetic treatments performed at regenerer® are meant to provide patients the results they desire without resulting in any side effects. However, some people may experience mild, temporary side effects such as redness, swelling, and slight pain around the treatment area.
